For centuries, people have used jewelry to adorn themselves and to make a statement about their status in society and individual style. While the tools and techniques of making rings, necklaces and bracelets have evolved over the ages, some things never change: Jewelry is meant to be eye-catching, exquisite, and to enhance the wearer in others’ eyes.

Bedazzled: 5,000 Years of Jewelry from the Walters Art Museum, currently on view in the new Ulla R. and Arthur F. Searing Wing of the Ringling Museum of Art (through April 29) offers viewers the chance to see examples of ornamentation ranging from the ancient Greeks to the Renaissance to the 20th century. You’ll marvel at the craftsmanship, the sumptuous materials used, and the infinite number of ways that exist to beautifully bedeck an arm, a neck or a hand.
